Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Arteriosclerosis
The buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls
Atherectomy
A procedure healthcare providers use to remove plaque buildup, restore blood flow and open narrow or blocked arteries.
Atherosclerosis
Thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of an artery
Atria
The two upper chambers in the heart , which receive blood from the veins and push it into the ventricles
Bifurcation
The division of something into two branches or parts.
bundle of His (AV bundle)
A part of the electrical system of the heart.
Capillaries
Delicate blood vessels that transport blood, nutrients and oxygen to cells in your organs and body systems.
Cardioversion
A medical procedure that uses quick, low-energy shocks to restore a regular heart rhythm.
Chordae Tendineae
Prevents the valves of heart from movement by holding the flaps tightly against the strong flow of blood.
Conduction system
The network of cells and electrical signals that controls your heartbeat.
Contralateral
Occurring on or acting in conjunction with a part on the opposite side of the body
Coronary Circulation
The circulation of blood in the arteries and veins that supply the heart muscle
Endocarditis
Most often from a bacterial infection, inflames the lining of your heart valves and chambers.
Implantable Defibrillator
A small battery-powered device placed in the chest. It detects and stops irregular heartbeats
Infarction
Tissue death (necrosis) due to inadequate blood supply to the affected area.
Ipsilateral
Belonging to or occurring on the same side of the body.
Nonselective Catheterization
The cardiologist places the catheter into the desired blood vessel
Non-tunneled catheter
Provides temporary venous access for more short-term treatments,
Occlusion
An occlusion is a complete or partial blockage of a blood vessel
Prolapse
A displacement of a part or organ of the body from its normal position, usually downward or outward, often resulting in it protruding from an orifice.
Pulmonary Circulation
The system of transportation that shunts de-oxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs to be re-saturated with oxygen before being dispersed into the systemic circulation.
Purkinje FIbers
Branches of specialized nerve cells that send electrical signals very quickly to your right and left heart ventricles and maintain a consistent heart rhythm.
Regurgitation
Leaking from a valve that does not close all the way.
Retrograde
Flowing backward
