Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
Ideal respiratory surface
A
- large in relation to volume of animal
- thin
- wet
- well supplied with blood
- contact with the source of oxygen (air or water)
2
Q
Upper respiratory tract
A
- nasal cavity
- pharynx
3
Q
Lower respiratory tract
A
- larynx
- trachea
- main, subsidiary bronchi
- bronchioles and alveoli
- associated blood vessels (pulmonary arteries and veins)
4
Q
Thoracic walls
A
- bony thoracic skeleton
- diaphragm
- intercostal muscles
- muscles of arms and abdomen
5
Q
Each lung has:
A
- 1 primary
- 2 (left) or 3 (right) secondary bronchi
- many smaller bronchi and bronchioles
6
Q
What kind of epithelium lines the alveoli?
A
simple squamous => forms thin layer for diffusion of oxygen and CO2
7
Q
Lungs before birth
A
“pond” area => gas exchange across placenta
lung maduration takes place last few wakes
8
Q
Thoracic cage
A
Protects lungs
9
Q
How many pairs of ribs?
A
12 + midline sternum
10
Q
Thoracic walls
A
Thoracic cavity must be expanded in all directions => bilaterally, superiorly/ inferiorly, anteroposteriorly
11
Q
What happens during INHALATION?
A
- external intercostal muscles pull RIBS UP toward 1st rib and this action also moves the ribs OUT and around the sternum forward
- DIAPHRAGM contracts + flattens (moves inferiorly)
- volume CHEST increases
12
Q
What happens during EXHALATION?
A
- lower ribs fixed by abdominal muscles
- ribs DOWN (pulled by internal intercostal muscles)
- diaphgram relaxes and moves UP
- volume of chest decreases
13
Q
Components of respiratory system
A
- rib cage + sternum
- intercostal muscles
- diaphgram (muscle)
14
Q
Left lung does not have
A
horizontal fissure
