Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the major function of respiratory system
Supply the body with oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
What is a non respiratory lung function
The nose humidifies and warms the air before going into the lungs
Production of sound
Insensible fluid losses like sweat
Defence against inhaled particles
What is the conducting zone
The nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and bronchioles
This is a passageway for air to move in and out of the lungs
What is the respiratory zone
Where gas exchange occurs
Made up of bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli
What is the visceral pleura
The portion of protective tissue that is attached directly to the lungs
What is parietal pleura
The portion of protective tissue that lines the inner surface of the chest wall and covers the diaphragm
What are the immune defences in the lungs
Hair in nasal passage
Lymphoid tissue
Cillia
Mucus
Antibodies
Alveolar macrophages
What is inspiration
Breathing in
What is expiration
Breathing out
What is cellular respiration
Oxygen + glucose —> Energy (ATP) + Carbon dioxide + water
What physical properties affect lung function
Compliance
Elasticity
Surface tension
What does the sympathetic system do
Causes smooth muscle in airway to relax
What does parasympathetic system do
Causes smooth muscle in airway to contract
