Respiratory System Flashcards
respiratory system - defintion
A series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen & removing carbon dioxide
Nose funstion
Moisturises, purifies + cleans air. Mucous and cilia remove dust + other tiny particles
Epiglottis function
Prevents food from going down the airway
Trachea function
Lets air travel down the lungs
Bronchus function
The bronchi transport air to and from the lungs
bronchioles functions
Carry air to the alveoli
Alveoli function
carry out gas exchange
Ribcage function
Protects hear + lungs
Intercostal muscles
Help with the movement of the ribcage during breathing
Lungs Function
The respiratory organs, located behind the ribcage
Diaphragm function
The muscles at the base of the lungs that contract and relax, forcing air in + out of the lungs
Breathing - Definition
The mechanical action of getting air in and out of the lungs
Inhaling
Intercostal muscles contract, making ribs move up + out
The diaphragm contracts and moves downwards
The chest volume increases
The lungs expand
The pressure on the lungs falls below atmospheric pressure, causing air to fill lungs
Exhaling
Intercostal muscles relax, making ribs move down + inwards
The diaphragm relaxes + moves upwards
the chest volume decreases
The lungs shrink, forcing air out.
the pressure inside the lungs rises above atmospheric pressure, causing air to move out of lungs
what are alveoli
Alveoli are tiny clusters of air sacks at the tip of each bronchiole. They carrie out gas exchange between the alveolis and the surround capillaries.
Oxygen moves from the air in the alveoli into the blood capillaries. At the same time, CO2 moves from the capillaries to the alveoli to be exhaled
