Q

Inhaling

A

Intercostal muscles contract, making ribs move up + out
The diaphragm contracts and moves downwards
The chest volume increases
The lungs expand
The pressure on the lungs falls below atmospheric pressure, causing air to fill lungs

Q

Exhaling

A

Intercostal muscles relax, making ribs move down + inwards
The diaphragm relaxes + moves upwards
the chest volume decreases
The lungs shrink, forcing air out.
the pressure inside the lungs rises above atmospheric pressure, causing air to move out of lungs

Q

what are alveoli

A

Alveoli are tiny clusters of air sacks at the tip of each bronchiole. They carrie out gas exchange between the alveolis and the surround capillaries.
Oxygen moves from the air in the alveoli into the blood capillaries. At the same time, CO2 moves from the capillaries to the alveoli to be exhaled
