Respiratory System Flashcards
Composed of the chambers of the internal nose that function as a part of the upper respiratory system
Nasal Cavity
The most posterior part of the pharynx. It is shared by the respiratory and digestive system. The upper respiratory and upper digestive tracks diverge right after this structure. The front of this structure merges with the triangular entrance of the larynx.
Laryngopharynx
Conveys air between the upper and lower respiratory structures.
Trachea
A portion of the pharynx that begins at the rear of the nasal cavity and functions as an airway in the upper respiratory system.
Nasopharynx
Two organs that are responsible for gas exchange
Lungs
Only section of the pharynx that always stays open
Nasopharynx
Major airways of the lower respiratory system
Bronchi
Main sites of gas exchange, where oxygen is brought into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is removed
Alveoli
Portion of the pharynx that is shared by the respiratory system and the digestive system. It functions as an airway in the upper respiratory system.
Oropharynx
Major airways of the lower respiratory system. Link the trachea with the right and left lungs. Wrapped in rings of hyaline cartilage with interiors lined with mucous membrane.
Primary Bronchi
Single alveolar sac
Alveolus
Opening inside of the alveolus
Alveolar Cavities
Where veins and arteries meet; gas exchange occurs here
Capillary Beds
Ends of the bronchi that contain smooth muscle but no cartilage
Bronchioles
