Integumentary System Flashcards
Adipose
Fatty connective tissue consisting mainly of apidocytes found primarily under the skin
Arrector Pili
Tiny muscle attached to base of hair follicle and dermal tissue (makes hair stand up)
Cortex
Outer layer of tissue immediately below the epidermis
Dermis
Thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis
Epidermis
Outermost layer of skin, waterproof barrier/skin tone
Gland
Secretes chemicals for use in the body
Hair follicle
A tube-like structure that surrounds the root and shaft of the hair
Keratin
A protein that your body produces to keep your skin, hair, and nails healthy. Waterproof, certain tissues are “keratinized” as they die.
Matrix
The mytotically active part of the nailbed; where nails start to grow
Medulla
The inner region of an organ or tissue, especially when it is distinguishable from the outer region.
Melanin
Dark brown or black pigment occurring in hair, skin, and the iris
Melanocytes
A mature melanin-forming cell, especially in the skin
Papilla
Located at bottom of hair follicle; nourishes hair
Papillae
Dermal Papillae - projections from the dermis that extend into the epidermis to help adhesion between the two layers and increase surface area
Root
Deep in skin, surrounded by hair follicle, sebaceous glands, and arrector pilli
Sebaceous Glands
Small gland that opens into a hair and produces oil
Sebum
Sticky, oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands; moisturizes skin
Shaft
Part of hair that is visible
Stratum Corneum
Outermost layer of the epidermis
Stratum Germinativum
The deepest layer of skin, separated from the dermis
Subcutaneous
Beneath the layers of skin
Sudoiferous Gland
Secretes sweat
Acne
When sebum/dead skin clogs pores
Albinism
Absence of pigment in hair and skin
Athlete´s Foot
Fungal infection on foot
Dermatitis
Skin inflammation
First Degree Burn
Only affects epidermis
Genital herpes
STI causing sores
Melanoma
Tumor of melanin cells
Rule of nines
Tool used to estimate burn percent to skin
Second degree burn
Burns that affect the epidermis and dermis
Skin Cancer
An abnormal growth of skin cells on the epidermis
Alopecia
A partial or complete absence of hair from areas where it normally grows
Third Degree Burn
A burn that extends into the fat layer
