Respiratory System Flashcards
Nose
Filters and Warm the air we inhale (mucous/cilia, traps pathogens)
Mouth
Allows air entry through mouth breathing
Pharynx
Allows movement of air from the nose and mouth to the larynx (mucous for protection)
Larynx
Passageway for air - epiglottis protects from food entering / vocal cords - voice
Trachea
Allows air to pass from larynx to bronchi ( C cartilage to ensure open airway)
Lung
Essential organ of respiration. Allows air flow for exchange of O2 and CO2
Bronchus
Directs air to into the lungs and to bronchioles
Bronchioles
Directs air to the alveoli
Alveoli
Enables gas exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide via diffusion
Diaphragm
Contracts and Relaxes - helps expand and contract lungs for air to enter (inhalation) and air to leave (exhalation), breathing in and out.
Pleura
Protecting - allows lung movements in ‘ breathing’ - respiration
Describe External and Internal Respiration
- External Respiration is transfer of gases from the external environment through to the lungs and into the bloodstream. Includes inhalation, transfer of gases in alveoli and exhalation.
- Internal Respiration is gas exchange (O2 and CO2) that occurs between the blood, cells and tissue.
