Blood Vessels Flashcards
1
Q
Structure of the Arteries
A
- Thick walls
- Elastic
- Small lumen
2
Q
Function of the Arteries
A
Transport blood away from the heart (oxygenated blood).
3
Q
Structure of the Veins
A
- Thin walls
- Wider lumen
- Has valves
4
Q
Function of the Veins
A
Transport blood towards the heart (deoxygenated blood). It has valves to prevent ‘back flow of blood’ and keep blood flowing.
5
Q
Structure of the Capillaries
A
- Thin wall
- 1 cell thick for diffusion
6
Q
Function of the Capillaries
A
Exchange of gases and nutrients which occurs between blood and tissue by the process of diffusion. Leucocytes can also pass through the Capillary wall.
