Respiratory Problems Flashcards
1
Q
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (DX)
A
- an acute condition
- common in preterm infants
- results in compromised O2 absorption and CO2 elimination
- many infants recover after a few days of med intervention, but some develop chronic lung conditions
2
Q
Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (DX)
A
- a chronic respiratory condition
- results from prolonged use of mechanical ventilation (often when treating acute respiratory conditions)
- results in airway thickening, excess mucus formation, and restricted alveolar growth
- kids are at higher risk of respiratory infections
3
Q
Asthma (DX)
A
- a chronic respiratory condition
- hyperreactive bronchial smooth muscle causes airway constriction in the lower respiratory tract, wheezing, and difficulty breathing
- first symptoms typically appear before age 5
- attacks may be triggered by allergens, smoke, cold air, exercise, irritant inhalation
4
Q
Asthma (OT)
A
- education about reducing exposure to irritants
- teaching self-management strategies, including pacing and stress management
- encouraging structured peer-group activities to reduce potential for social isolation
- education about breathing exercises, stretching, and controlled breathing
5
Q
Cystic Fibrosis, CF (DX)
A
- a chronic respiratory condition
- a degenerative condition affecting multiple systems (muscle-producing glands produce thick, viscous, and low-water-content secretions which block the pancreatic duct, the bronchial tree, and the digestive tract)
- symptoms: abdominal distention in infants, salty-tasking skin (excess sodium levels), greasy/foul-smelling stool
- most serious complication is chronic pulmonary disease (CPD), characterized by a chronic cough, wheezing, and lower respiratory infections
- may result in an enlarged right side of the heart, potentially leading to heart failure
6
Q
Cystic Fibrosis, CF (OT)
A
- education about disease progression
- education about energy conservation strategies
- teaching efficient breathing techniques
