Hemophilia (DX)

A
  • blood disorder commonly affecting males
  • 60% of cases are hereditary
  • characterized by the absence or reduction of blood clotting proteins
  • results in longer bleeding time
  • 3 types: mild (bleeding episode usually seen after a traumatic injury - usually not detected otherwise); moderate (bleeding episodes after minor injuries); severe (bleeding episodes after injuries or without an apparent cause, may also affect muscles and joints)
  • signs and symptoms: excessive bleeding, excessive bruising, spontaneous bleeding or bleeding without a known cause, nosebleeds

  • caused by iron deficiency in the blood
  • often treated through diet
  • may be symptomatic of other conditions, such as lead poisoning, vitamin deficiencies, leukemia, and sickle cell disease

  • kids may have decreased energy
  • kids are at risk for organ damage due to blocked blood flow
  • kids may experience pain
