Respiratory Overview Flashcards
What is respiration?
ventilation of the lungs and use of oxygen in cellular metabolism
4 processes of respiration
- pulmonary ventilation
- external respiration
- transport
- internal respiration
What happens during pulmonary ventilation?
breathing; movement of air into and out of the lungs
What happens during transport?
transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood
What happens during external respiration?
- gas exchange between blood and lungs
- delivering oxygen from the lungs into the blood
- removing carbon dioxide from the blood and loading it into the lungs
What happens during internal respiration?
- gas exchange between blood and body tissues
- delivering oxygen to cells and removing carbon dioxide
Cellular respiration definition
process that converts oxygen into ATP and releases carbon dioxide
Functions of the respiratory system
- gas exchange
- communication
- sense of smell
- regulates body pH
- blood pressure regulation
- blood and lymph flow
- blood filtration
- expulsion of abdominal contents
- platelet production
- protects respiratory surfaces from dehydration, temp. change, and pathogens
Function of the upper respiratory system
- warms, cleanses, and humidifies inhaled air
- detects odors
- serves as a resonating chamber for the voice
Function of the lower respiratory system
facilitate gas exchange
Structures within the upper respiratory system
- nose
- nasal cavity
- pharynx
- larynx
Structures within the lower respiratory system
- trachea
- bronchi
- bronchioles
- alveolar ducts
- alveoli
Function of the conducting zone
passageways that transport/conduct air
Functions of the respiratory zone
gas exchange with blood
Structures in the conducting zone
- nose
- pharynx
- larynx
- trachea
- primary broncus
- secondary bronchus
- tertiary bronchus
- terminal bronchiole
Structures in the respiratory zone
- respiratory bronchioles
- alveolar ducts
- alveoli
