Respiratory Muscles Flashcards
What is job of external intercostals?
Pull ribcage upwards and outwards –> increase lateral and antero-posterior diameter of thorax
What is job of neck muscles?
Accessory muscles –> pull ribcage upwards
What are the neck muscles?
- Sternocleidomastoids 2. Scalene muscles
What is job of sternocleidmastoids?
Elevate the sternum
What is job of scalene muscles?
Elevate both the first 2 ribs and the sternum
What is job of the oblique, transverse and rectus abdominis muscles?
Pull the ribcage downwards
By fixing the shoulder girdle, what happens? When can this be seen?
Pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi muscles will pull the ribcage outwards Patients with respiratory distress (acute asthma), or athletes at end of race
What does contraction of abdominal muscles cause?
Increases intra-abdominal pressure and pulls ribcage downwards and medially
When are abdominal muscles contracted?
In forced expiration
Which muscles aid in pulling the ribcage downwards?
- Internal intercostals 2. Innermost intercostals 3. Oblique, transverse and rectus abdominis muscles
Sternocleidomastoids
How does latissimus dorsi assist in forced breathing?
Fixing shoulder girdle causes latissimus dorsi to aid in lifting lower ribs
What are the scalene muscles?
The scalene muscles are three paired muscles (anterior, middle and posterior), located in the lateral aspect of the neck.
