Acetylcyteine/Mucomyst
Class: antidotes, mucolytic
Indications: overdose of acetaminophen
Side Effects: rash, vomiting, nausea, bronchospasm.
Route: PO, IV, Inhaln.
Implementation: PO: dilute oral solution with a soft drink.
Contraindications: hypersensitivity.
albuterol/Proventil, Ventolin
Class: Bronchodilators, adrenergics.
Indications: COPD, Bronchospasm, asthma.
Action: bronchodilation.
Side Effects: paradoxical bronchospasm, chest pain, restlessness, tremor, palpitations.
Route: PO, Inhaln.
Implementation: PO: administer with meals to minimize gastric irritation.
Contraindications: hypersensitivity.
salmetrol/Serevent
Class: bronchodilator, adrenergic.
Indications: asthma, bronchospasm, COPD.
Action: bronchodilation.
SE: headache, bronchospasm.
Contraindications: acute asthma attacks
Ipratropium bromide (duo Neb)
Class: bronchodilator, anticholinergics.
Route: Inhaln.
Indication: Therapy of reversable airway obstruction due to COPD.
Side Effects: bronchospasm
Contraindications: acute bronchospasms
Teaching: rinse mouth after use of inhaler.
Fluticasone salmetrol/ advair diskus
Class: anti-inflammatory, corticosteroids.
Route: inhaln.
Indication: asthma.
SE: bronchospasm, headache.
Contraindication: acute attack of asthma.
methylprednisolone/ Solu-medrol
Class: anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressants, corticosteroids.
Indication: Chronic inflammatory disease: allergies, immunosuppressant.
Route: IM, PO, IV
Administer: with meals, shake solution well and do not dilute.
Teaching: avoid grape fruit juice
SE: nausea, hypertension.
Contraindication: active infection.
How do you use an inhaler?
- remove the cap and hold inhaler up right
- shake the inhaler.
- tilt your head back slightly and breath out slowly.
- Position inhaler.
- press down on inhaler to release medication and breath in slowly.
- hold breath for 10 seconds
- repeat puff as directed and wait 1 minute between each puff.
