Respiratory Laws and other crap Flashcards
Dalton’s law
Each gas in a mixture of gases exerts a pressure proportional to the percentage of the gas.
Independently of the other gases present
Because gas molecules are so far away from each other
How would you figure out the total pressure of a mixture of gases?
Add all the partial pressures of each gas up
Boyle’s law
Pressure exerted by a constant number of gas molecules (at a constant temperature) is inversely proportional to the volume of the container
AKA
As container decreases in volume, pressure increases
Henry’s law
Solubility of a gas dissolved in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas not in the liquid
Alveolar gas equation
Measures alveolar partial pressure
Laplace’s law
Describes relationship between pressure (P), surface tension (T) and radius of an alveolus (r).
P = 2T/r
Surfactant ensures that small alveoli don’t collapse into bigger ones
