Leukocytes Flashcards
Neutrophil
Phagocyte
Found in blood, migrates to tissues during inflammation
(most common leukocyte)
Eosinophil
Works by phagocytosis or by secreting toxic chemicals
Fights off parasites
Found in blood & mucosal surfaces (GI, respiratory, urinary tract)
Monocytes
Circulate in blood until they migrate to a tissue or organ and become a macrophage
(Kidney shaped nucleus!)
Macrophages
Large phagocytes that reside in areas of body at risk of infection (Skin, resp, GI tracts)
Basophils
Secretory cell that secretes:
Heparin - flushes out site of infection
Histamine - causes inflammation to attract infection fighting cells
Lymphocytes
Specific immune response
T- thymus - killer, helper and memory
B - bone marrow - helper, memory and plasma
