Respiratory Illnesses and Disorders Flashcards
What are Artificial Lungs?
A temporary artificial organ that provides oxygen and the removal of carbon dioxide is used in patients whose lungs are not functioning properly.
What are FLAP Inhibitors?
A drug that stops the production of chemicals called FLAP, can cause swelling and inflammation in the lungs. Helps people with COPD or Asthma better deal with inflammation or swelling
What is Asthma?
A condition where your airways narrow and swell, producing extra mucus, making breathing difficult. Causes of Asthma include respiratory infections as a child, allergens, or genetics. Asthma cannot be cured but treated through inhalers and tablets.
What is Bronchial Thermoplasty?
When the bronchiole muscles contract due to asthma attacks, bronchial thermoplasty reduces the thickness of muscles surrounding the bronchioles to sustain oxygen flow. Done by adding heat to the smooth muscles, effectively reducing the size of the smooth muscle.
What is COPD?
COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease defined by damage to the lungs, causing swelling and inflammation in the airways that limit oxygen intake.
What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Genetic disorder that creates thick mucus which clogs organs like the lungs
What is Influenza?
Influenza is an airborne respiratory virus that can cause sore throats, fevers and coughs. Treatment includes staying at home and drinking a lot of fluids and antibiotics
What is Pneumonia?
An infection caused by viruses like Rhinovirus and influenza causes inflammation in Alveoli, filling them up with a pus of mucus. Can be treated with antibiotics or oxygen therapy
What is Tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis is a contagious infection in the lungs that can spread through organs in the bloodstream.
