Respiratory Histology Flashcards
Describe the histology of the 3 main regions of the nasal cavity
Vestibule - strat squam kerat. Sebaceous and sweat glands
Respiratory region - pseudostrat ciliated columnar with goblet cells
Olfactory - pseudostrat ciliated columnar with bowmans (olfactory) glands.
1. Olfactory cells - bipolar ciliated neuron
2. Sustentacular - supporting cell with microvilli
3. Basal stem cells
NOTE: no goblet cells
Describe histology of the larynx
Most of larynx lined by resp epithelium except
- True vocal cords = strat squam non-kerat
- Superior epiglottis = strat squam non-kerat
Vocal ligament = dense regular CT
Vocalis m. = skeletal muscle
Along the respiratory tree describe changes in
- Epithelium
- Hyaline cartilage
- Sm muscle
- Ciliated cells
- Goblet cells
- Glands
Epithelium - pseudostrat, simple columnar, cuboidal (bronchioles), alveolar: 1 + 2
Hyaline cartilage - rings to irregular plates, none in bronchioles
Smooth muscle - no prominent sm muscle in bronchioles
Clara cells -
