Respiratory Failure Flashcards
What is it? identifying RF? Types and causes
1
Q
Define Respiratory Failure
A
Syndrome
OF inadequate Gas Exchange
Due to dysfunction of respiratory System
2
Q
Types of Respiratory failure
A
Type 1= Hypoxaemic
More common than
Type 2= Hypercapnic
3 & 4 (iatrogenic RF in surgery and shock)
3
Q
DEFINING Type 1 R Failure
A
PaO2 < 8
Ventilation perfusion mismatch (V/Q)
Increased shunt fraction (Qs/Qt)
refractory to supplimental 02 therapy (unless caused by low ambient o2)
4
Q
DEFINING Type 2 R Failure
A
PaCO2 >6 (often hypoxic as well)
Failure to breath off / exhange CO2
Decreased alveolar minute ventilation (V2)
5
Q
Causes Type 1 Resp Failure
A
ventilation-perfusion mismatch Pneumonia PE Pulmonary Oedema Atelectasis Pulmonary Fibrosis Pulmonary Hypertension Aspiration Blood- heamothorax Pus- empyema
6
Q
Causes Type 2 Resp Failure
A
Ventilation Failure Obesity +++ Pneumothorax COPD Asthma Central Hypo-ventilation Neuropathy Myopathy MSK eg Kyphoscoliosis
