Respiratory Failure Flashcards
Type 1 RF
damage to gas exchanging organ (lung) - V/ Q mismatch
The lung is gone
causes of Type 1 RF
pneumonia, pulmonary oedema, COPD , Bronchia asthma
Mx of Type 1 RF
Oxygen +/- ventilation
Type 2 RF
ventilatory failure- inadequate alveolar ventilation to transport oxygen into blood and excrete CO2 ( respi pump failure)
Patient doesn’t breathe
Causes of Type 2 RF
pulmonary disease- COPD,
cervical cord disease
Diaphragmatic failure
Polio
Myasthenia gravis
GBS
Mx of Type 2 RF
Ventilation +/- Oxygen
PaO2 and PaCO2 levels in Type 1 RF
PaO2 reduced
PaCO2 reduced
PaO2 and PaCO2 levels in Type 2 RF
PaO2 reduced
PaCO2 increased
two mechanisms that trigger the respi center
hypoxia
hypercapnia
Respi pump
Respi center - SC - Nerves - NMJ - Respi muscles
