Respiratory Drugs Flashcards
Epinephrine Class
Sympathetic Agonist
MOA of Epinephrine
Acts directly on α and β adrenergic receptors with a preference to β receptors. This results in increased hear rate, cardiac contractile force, systemic vascular resistence, increased blood pressure, bronchodilation and vasoconstriction.
Onset of Epinephrine
3-10 minutes IM
Peak effects of Epinephrine
20 minutes IM
Duration of Epinephrine
20-30 minutes IM
Indications for Epinephrine
Bronchial asthma, COPD exacerbation, allergic reaction, anaphylaxis.
Contraindications for Epinephrine
Cardiovascular disease, hypertension.
When should IV Epi 1/10mg be used in respiratory emergencies?
In patients with profound anaphylaxis with hypotension and shock. These patients will be peripherally vasoconstricted and absorption of IM med will be delayed.
Side effects of Epinephrine
Palpitations, anxiety, tremulousness, headache, dizziness, N&V, increased myocardial oxygen demand and subsequent myocardial ischemia.
Dosage of IM Epinephrine
- 3-0.5 mg adult IM
0. 01 mg/kg peds IM
Class of Albuterol
Sympathetic agonist
MOA of Albuterol
Albuterol is a selective sympathomimetic for β2 adrenergic receptors. This causes prompt bronchodilation.
Onset of Albuterol
5-15 minutes inhaled
Peak effects of Albuterol
1-1.5 hours
Duration of Albuterol
3-6 hours
