Respiratory Distress Syndrome Razi Flashcards
Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS)?
Surfactant deficiency; primarily in premature infants; its incidence is inversely related to gestational age and birthweight
The major constituents of surfactant are?
-Dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (lecithin),
• Phosphatidylglycerol
• Apoproteins (surfactant proteins SP-A, SP-B, SP-C, and SP- D)
• Cholesterol
What are the lab criteria for
Respiratory failure in newborn?
-PaCO2 > 60 mmHg (hypoxemia)
● pH < 7,20 (metabolic acido)
● PaO2 < 50 mmHg (hypercapnia)
What are the clinical characteristics in a newborn with respiratory distress syndrome?
Intercostal and subcostal retractions
Tachypnea (>60) (rapid breathing)
Cyanosis
Apnea (cessation of breathing)
Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
Nasal flaring
CADITN
Respiratory distress syndrome may occur also in which babies?
• Infant with diabetic mother
• Perinatal asphyxia(O2 deprivation)
• Surfactant protein-C deficiency (familial predisposition)
• Meconium aspiration syndrome
• Pneumoniae
Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia relation with gestational age?
BPD increases inversely with gestational age.
