Respiratory Diseases Flashcards
What is the cause of Acute bronchitis?
can be caused by infection. Upper respiratory tract infection exposure to inhaled irritants.
What are the signs of acute bronchitis?
productive cough, diffuse rhonchi and wheezes, dyspnea, chest pain, and low grade fever. generalized malaise and headache
What is the definitive test for bronchitis?
the chest X-ray will show us where this inflammation is.
Why do we get a sputum test for acute bronchitis?
sputum culture will show us the organism that is present so we can select the appropriate antibiotics to treat it.
What testing is done to determine acute bronchitis?
Chest x-ray and sputum culture
What TX is appropriate for acute bronchitis?
Antibiotics:penicillin, cough suppressant: codeine, dextromethorphan, acetaminophen, bronchodilator: albuterol
As a nurse what interventions would i implement for acute bronchitis?
- bed rest to conserve energy and balance oxygen demand and supply -humidifier to add humidity to inhaled air, it loosens up secretions and prevents dryness.
- increasing fluid is also appropriate.
Legionnaires disease pathology?
infection caused by pneumophila which is transmitted via airborne
What happens if legionnaires disease is not treated early?
can cause respiratory failure
What can cause legionnaires disease?
-legionella
-pneumophila
-airborne transmission
Signs and symptoms of legionnaires disease?
significantly elevated temperatures, headache, nonproductive cough, diarrhea, and general malaise
How do we test for legionnaires disease?
-urine testing
-blood tests
-sputum
-pulmonary tissue cultures
-fluid cultures
How do we treat legionnaires disease?
-antibiotics: erythromycin, rifampin
-oxygen therapy, possibly even mechanical ventilation.
-vasopressors (dopamine or dobutamine) for shock
-analgesics for pain and fever
What nursing interventions can be implemented for legionnaires?
-give adequate IV fluid therapy to maintain hydration to be able to get rid of secretions and needed for healing.
-bed rest with bed elevated at least 30 degrees. (promotes lung function)
What causes Covid?
infection with severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)
What is the etiology/risk for getting COVID?
Being exposed to 2(SARS-CoV-2)
S/S of COVID
fever,chills ,SOB ,fatigue
muscle or body aches
headache
loss of taste or smell
sore throat
nasal congestion
N/V/D
trouble breathing/ dyspnea
hypoxia
pneumonia
acute respiratory distress syndrome
What testing is done for COVID
Antibody testing
What is the TX for COVID?
There is no treatment we would just manage the symptoms.
What nursing intervention should be implemented?
quarantine along with any close contacts for up to 14 days.
Anthrax patho?
infectious disease caused by the spore forming bacterium bacillus anthracis.
S/S of anthrax
Resembles the symptoms of the common cold and influenza.
What testing do we do for anthrax?
Chest x-ray and sputum culture
What is the TX for anthrax?
Antibiotics like: cipro and doxycycline
