Respiratory, Communicable diseases, effects of radiation, decon Flashcards
Issues with bronchodilators
Some systemic absorption - may precipitate MI, cause hypoK
May result in hypoxemia due to shunting and VQ mismatch
Onset of diuretics
At least 30 minutes
Infectious vs communicable disease
Infectious disease - results from invasion of a host by disease producing organism
Communicable disease - one that can be transmitted from one source to another
Meningitis precaution
Droplet
Varicella precautions
Airborne
Rash of smallpox
Mucous membrane lesion before rash
Face/hands forearms –> to lower extremities and trunks
Smallpox vesicles
Firm, deep seated vesicles or pustules in the same stage of development
Chickenpox vs smallpox rash
Chickenpox - centripetal
Smallpox - centrifugal
Smallpox timeline
Incubation - 10-14 days
Prodrome - 2-4 days
Rashes after that
Bubonic plague facts
Most common type
Humans infected by flea bites or handling infected/dead animals via break in ski
60% mortality if left untreated
Isolation vs Quarantine
Isolation: separate ill persons who have communicable disease from those who are healthy (I for ill)
Quarantine: separate and restrict movement of well people
Decontamination vs disinfection
Decon: Removal of microorganisms to leave an item safe for handling
Disinfection: Inactivation of disease producing process
High vs low level disinfection
High level when processing semi critical items. Destroys vegetative bacteria
Low level: When processing non critical items and some environmental surfaces
