Respiratory bacteria Flashcards
Bordetella pertussis
Gram negative.
Neisseria meningitides
Gram negative.
Haemophilus influenza
Gram negative.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Gram negative.
Motile with flagellum, oxidase positive, feed on carbohydrates, resilient bacteria that lives in the environment. Opportunistic infection. Transmission can be nosocomial. Forms biofilms. Green/blue in color and smells like grapes.
Legionella pneumophila
Gram negative (stain poorly, so use acid fast). Motile with flagellum. Obligate aerobe found in the environment. Opportunistic infection. Transmission by aerosolized particles. Requires cysteine and ferric iron for growth. Cut glass appearance on plate of buffered charcoal yeast extract. Grows slowly. Symptoms 2-14 days post-exposure.
Corynebacterium diphtheriae
Gram positive.
Streptococcus pyogenes
Gram positive.
Mycoplasma pneumonia
Acid fast stain.
Staphylococcus aureus
Gram positive.
Streptococcus pneumoniae
Gram positive.
Mycobacterium tuberculosis
Acid fast rods (Gram stain does not penetrate).
Non-motile, no spores, aerobic.
Special cell wall has cord factor (trehalose dimycolate) that produces caseating granulomas.
Common in Africa and asia. On the rise from HIV.
MDR and XDR on the rise.
Only infects humans. Transmission by air droplets.
Diagnose with PPD, Quantiferon, sputum.
Tx: it’s complicated.
