What are the four main components in a respiratroy assessment?
Inspect, palpate, percuss, ausculate
Before doing IPPA, what must you do?
End of bed, look at arms, face and hands
What aspect are you looking for in the end of bed assessment?
Positioning, eye contact, cyanosis, accessory muscle usuage, audible wheeze, talking in full sentences, temperatrure, home oxygen, cigarettes
On percussion what is abnormal sounds?
Hyper-résonant - pneumothorax
Dull - pulmonary collapsed, severe pulmonary fibrosis
Stony dull - effusion, haemothorax
On percussion, what are normal sounds?
Reasonant - continuing to sound - echoing
On chest auscultation what are abnormal sounds?
Wheeze - narrowing of the airways - asthma or copd
Crackles - peripheral airways collapse
Bronchial - high pitched breath sound with hollow or blowing quality
Pleural rub - creaking sound
