Respiratory and Circulatory Systems Flashcards

1
Q

What is the respiratory system comprised of?

A

The respiratory system is comprised of the upper airway, such as the nose and mouth, pharynx, larynx and epiglottis; structures of the lower airway, such as trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli (site of carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange in the blood) and lungs (which are the principal organs of respiration).

Q

What does the circulatory system include?

A

The circulatory system includes the heart (a four-chambered muscular organ [right and left atria and right and left ventricles] that pumps blood throughout the body, blood vessels (arteries that carry mostly oxygenated blood away from the heart, veins that carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart and capillaries that connect arteries and veins) and blood (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma).

Q

What is external respiration or ventilation?

A

External respiration or ventilation is the mechanical process of moving air in and out of the lungs to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide between body tissues and the environment, which is primarily influenced by changes in pressure inside the chest that cause air to flow into or out of the lungs

Q

What is internal respiration or cellular respiration?

A

Internal respiration or cellular respiration is respiration at the cellular level, carried out to obtain energy when oxygen reacts with glucose to produce water, carbon dioxide and energy.

Q

What is the pulse?

A

The pulse is a wave of pressure caused when the heart pumps blood from the left ventricle to the body.
