Respiratory Acidosis Flashcards
Learn all about respiratory acidosis
1
Q
What is respiratory acidosis?
A
- Characterised by a raised PaCO2, normal/slightly elevated bicarb and low pH
- Resp acidosis may be complicated by metabolic derangement (mixed acidosis)
- Measurement of bicarb gives diagnosis
2
Q
What is acute respiratory acidosis?
A
- Serum bicarb inc by 1mM. for each 10mmHg inc in PaCO2
3
Q
What is chronic respiratory acidosis?
A
- Serum bicarb inc by 3.5mM/every 10mmHg inc in PaCO2
4
Q
If bicarb lower than expected then?
A
Mixed respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis
5
Q
If bicarb higher than expected?
A
Mixed respiratory acidosis and metabolic alkalosis.
6
Q
What can cause respiratory acidosis?
A
- Lungs and airways
- Thoracic cage and pleura: AS, kyphoscoliosis
- CNS: Raised intercranial P, trauma, narcotics
- Neuromuscual: epilepsy,
