1. Introduction
2. Verbally confirm name and DOB
3. Confirm name and DOB on ABG form
4. Wash hands and explain procedure
5. Check collateral circulation in hand (Tight fist/ulnar&rad occlusion)
6. Wash hands

7. Collect equipment: (in the order of use!)
Chlorhexidine wipe
Gloves
Syringe (with heparin inside)
Needle
Rubber bung
Cap
Sharps bin
Gauze or cotton wool

8. Palpate maximum pulsation point (-no repalpation)
9. Clean with chlorhexidine
10. Gloves on
11. Warn patient
12. Insert needle at 45degrees until flashback
    - allow it to fill on its own
13. Remove and hold cotton swab on wound with pressure for 5 minutes
14. Wash hands
