What are the steps for demonstrating and taking measurement of PEFR.?

  1. Name and DOB
  2. Wash hands
  3. Introduction and explanation
  4. Prepare the PEFR meter: mouthpiece on, dial at 0
  5. Posture: straighten back
  6. Position: hold meter horizontal, fingers off dial
  7. Prepare: take deepest breath possible
  8. Tight seal around mouthpiece with lips
  9. Exhale as hard and fast as possible
  10. Demonstrate technique
  11. Take three readings
  12. Wash hands

What are the steps in taking an arterial blood gas?

A
  1. Introduction
  2. Verbally confirm name and DOB
  3. Confirm name and DOB on ABG form
  4. Wash hands and explain procedure
  5. Check collateral circulation in hand (Tight fist/ulnar&rad occlusion)
  6. Wash hands
7. Collect equipment: (in the order of use!)
Chlorhexidine wipe
Gloves
Syringe (with heparin inside)
Needle
Rubber bung
Cap
Sharps bin
Gauze or cotton wool
  1. Palpate maximum pulsation point (-no repalpation)
  2. Clean with chlorhexidine
  3. Gloves on
  4. Warn patient
  5. Insert needle at 45degrees until flashback
    - allow it to fill on its own
  6. Remove and hold cotton swab on wound with pressure for 5 minutes
  7. Wash hands
