What are the signs of respiratory distress?
accessory msucle use, intercostal reactions, nasal flaring in kids, tripoding, cyanosis
What should u evaluate in the neck?
position of trachea
What should u evaluate on the chesticles?
AP diameter, deformities (pectus excavatum/carinatum), flail chest, barrel chest
What should u say to the pt when doing auscultations?
“Deep, slow breaths, in and out, through the mouth”
How many levels should u do aroudn the body?
3 levels anteriorly with one above the clavicle
2 level laterally
3 levels posteriorly
What are vesicular breath sounds?
Soft, low-pitched
Over majority of the lung fields
Last longer in inspiration than expiration
What are bronchovesicular sounds?
Intermediate intensity
Equal duration of inspiration and expiration
What are bronchial sounds?
Loud
Last longer over expiration than inspiration
What are adventitious sounds?
Crackles
Wheezes
Rhonchi
Rubs
What do crackles indicate?
Pneumonia
Fibrosis
Heart failure
What do wheezes indicate?
Musical, High-pitched
Expiratory and inspiratory
Bronchospasm
Asthma, COPD, Bronchitis
What do rhonchi indicate?
Low-pitched
Snoring quality
Suggests secretions in the larger airways
What do u palpate for on the chesticles?
Tenderness
Boney Deformity
Symmetrical Expansion
What is tactile fremitus?
Vibrations from the bronchial tree
Ulnar surface of the hand
Pt. says “99” - assess symmetrically
Decreased: COPD, Pleural effusion, pneumothorax
What do u percuss for on the chesticles?
Symmetrical approach for each level
Diaphragmatic excursion
