A
- first stage of anaerobic and aerobic respiration
- doesn’t require any respiration

Step 1: Phosphorylation
A
- Glucose as reactant
- phosphorylated to glucose phosphate
- adds 2 phosphate groups
- uses 2 ATP

Production of triose phosphate
A
- glucose phosphate highly reactive so splits into 2x 3C triose phosphate (TP)

Oxidation
A
- TP oxidised by NAD -> 2x NADH
- Uses 4 ATP converts to ADP + Pi
- Produces 2x pyruvate
