Respiration - February Mock GCSE Window Flashcards
define respiration
respiration is the release of energy by the cells - the chemical process
what is the source of energy for both aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
glucose
does aerobic respiration use oxygen?
yes - anaerobic does not
explain why anaerobic respiration does not use oxygen
anaerobic respiration is used in shorter activities e.g. sprinting. During vigorous exercise your body cells may not have enough oxygen for aerobic respiration to take place, and so only a short amount/short burst of energy is released
what is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen —-> carbon dioxide + water
+ energy
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
(muscles)
glucose —> lactic acid + some energy
(yeast)
glucose —> alcohol + carbon dioxide + energy
what are the two tests for carbon dioxide?
-using limewater (it will turn cloudy when you blow into it
-universal indicator (turns yellow)
describe oxygen debt
- occurs during anaerobic respiration
- build up of lactic acid
- continue to breath rapidly
- an acid in the blood
The amount of oxygen required to remove the lactic acid, and replace the body’s reserves of oxygen
