Respiration B4 Flashcards
why is respiration important?
- movement
- synthesis of large molecule
- active transport
word equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen gas ➡️ carbon dioxide + water + energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ➡️ 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATPs
process of respiration
during aerobic respiration, glucose from food reacts with oxygen. the reactions release energy from glucose
which cells carry out the most aerobic respiration and why?
all cells can carry out respiration, muscle cells are more active carrying out repatriation more than other cells especially when exercising
word equation for anaerobic respiration for animals
glucose ➡️ lactic acid + (energy)
word equation for plants and micro organisms
glucose ➡️ ethanol and carbon dioxide + energy
what situations does the body carry out anaerobic respiration?
sprinting - when not enough oxygen is transferred to the cells therefore anaerobic respiration is carried out
what is the effect of lactic acid on animal cells?
lactic acid causes cramp in the muscles. it is toxic in large amounts
what are the similarities and differences between anaerobic and aerobic respiration?
anaerobic - without oxygen
aerobic - with oxygen
anaerobic - quicker
aerobic - slower
anaerobic - yes lactic acid production
aerobic - no lactic acid production
anaerobic - no (in the cytoplasm)
aerobic - yes
what is the nucleus?
contains DNA which carries out the genetic code for making enzymes used in the chemical reactions of respiration
what is the cytoplasm?
where the enzymes are made and which contains the enzymes
what is the mitochondria?
contain enzymes for the reactions in aerobic respiration (in animals, plants and yeast)
what does the cell membrane do?
allows gases and water to pass in and out of the cells while making a barrier to other chemicals
3 useful products made using anaerobic respiration:
- biogas
- bread
- alcohol
how do you sample using quadrat?
- place the square grid (quadrat) on the ground
- identify the animals and plants (using a key) and count how many there are
- plant growth is recorded as percentage cover (%)
