Respiration (B2) Flashcards
What is respiration?
A process in living organisms involving the production of energy, typically with the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide from the oxidation of complex organic substances.
What is the word equation for aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration:
glucose → lactic acid (+ energy released)
Aerobic:
glucose (sugar) + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water + energy
What happens to the body when we exercise?

To create more ATP, your body needs extra oxygen, so breathing increases and your heart starts pumping more blood to your muscles. Without sufficient oxygen, lactic acid will form instead. Tiny tears in your muscles make them grow bigger and stronger as they heal
What is glycogen and why do we need it?
It is a large multi-branched polymer of glucose which is accumulated in response to insulin and broken down into glucose in response to glucagon. Glycogen is mainly stored in the liver and the muscles and provides the body with a readily available source of energy if blood glucose levels decrease.
What is oxygen debt?
a temporary oxygen shortage in the body tissues arising from exercise.
