Respiration and Photosynthesis - Leaf Structure and Transpiration Flashcards
what is a leaf
a leaf is an organ
what types of tissue does the leaf contain
leaves contain both epidermal, mesophyll, xylem and phloem tissues
why is the upper epidermis transparent
so that light can pass through it to the palisade layer
why does the palisade layer have lots of chloroplasts
this is because its near the top of the leaf where they can get the most light
what do the phloem tubes transport and what is this process called
phloem tubes transport food substances made in the leaves to the rest of the plant for immediate use. The transport goes in both directions and is called translocation
what do xylem tubes transport
xylem tubes transport water and mineral ions from the roots to the stem leaves, this is called transpiration
what are xylem tubes made up of
dead cells joined end to end with no end walls between them and a hole down the middle, strengthened with a material called lignin
what are phloem tubes made up of
columns of elongates living cells with small pores in the end walls to allow cell sap to flow through
what is transpiration
it is the loss of water from the plant
what is transpiration caused by
the evaporation and diffusion of water from a plants surface
