Non-Communicable Diseases - Heart Disease and Treatments Flashcards
give an example of a heart disease
coronary heart disease, it is non communicable
what does coronary heart disease do
it builds up layers of fatty material inside the coronary arteries, narrowing them
this reduces the flow of blood
giving a lack of oxygen to the heart
how do we treat coronary heart disease
stents are used to keep the coronary arteries open
statins are widely used to reduce blood cholesterol levels, slowing down the rate the fatty material deposits
what may happen to heart valves
in some people heart valves may become faulty, preventing the value from opening fully. Faulty heart valves can be replaced using biological or mechanical valves
what is done in the case of heart failure
a donor heart can be transplanted. artificial hearts can be used temporarily to keep the patient alive until a transplant is available
