Respiration and Metabolism Flashcards
What is respiration?
The process of transferring energy from glucose which occurs in every living cell
What are 3 ways that organisms use energy from glucose?
•to maintain body temperature
•to build larger molecules from smaller ones
•for muscle contraction
Give examples of some metabolic reactions where larger molecules are built from smaller ones:
•glucose molecules joining together to form starch(in plant cells)
•glucose molecules joining together to form glycogen (in animal cells)
• lipid molecules each made from 1x glycerol and 3x fatty acids
•when glucose combines with nitrates to make amino acids to form proteins
Give examples of some metabolic reactions where larger molecules are broken down into smaller ones:
•when glucose is broken down in respiration
•when excess protein is broken down to produce urea
What is metabolism?
The sum of all reactions that happen in a cell or the body
What type of reaction is respiration?
Exothermic
What is an exothermic reaction??
A reaction that transfer energy to the environment
What is respiration controlled by?
Enzymes
