Define respiration
Skills for midwifery practice states that respiration is where the body gains oxygen (inspiration) and excretes carbon dioxide (expiration)
What is the normal rate for an adult?
12-20bpm
What is the average rate for the newborn?
30-60bpm
What shoukd normal breathing be like?
Should be effortless, automatic, regular and almost silent
What are the indicators of respiration?
As part of baseline observations
Whenever other vital signs are recorded when completing MEOWS chart
Admission to hospital (especially with respiratory complaint)
Prior to commencing rescusitation
Any signs of altered breathing pattern
After recovery from anaesthesia (NICE 2011)
What do we look for when observing respiration?
Observation of rate per minute
Depth
Associated signs (colour)
Regularity
When would we observe respiration in the newborn?
At birth as part of the APGAR score
Whenever vital signs are being recorded
Maternal prolonged rupture of membranes
During resuscitation
What factors can influence respiration?
High altitude Exercise Pain Fever Infection
What is the word for increased respiration rate?
Tachypnoea
More than 20bpm
When might tachypnoea occur?
When in pain
exercise
fear
fever
What is the word for decreased respiration rate?
Bradypnoea
Below 12bpm
What term means shortness of breath lying down?
Orthopnoea
What term means difficulty breathing or shortness of breath?
Dysopnoea
What term is meant for temporary cessation of breath?
Apnoea
