Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
It is the biochemical process in which the cells of an organism obtain energy by combining oxygen and glucose, resulting in the release of carbon dioxide, water and ATP.
Why is energy needed?
For life processes such as:
Growth and repair
Movement
Control of body temperature in mammals
What is aerobic respiration?
Glucose and oxygen react together in cells to produce carbon dioxide and water and releases energy in the form of ATP.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Glucose breaks down without oxygen. This chemical reaction transfers energy from glucose to the cell. This reaction produces lactic acid rather than carbon dioxide and water.
What is the equation for fermentation?
Glucose——> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What are the steps of cellular respiration?(3)
- Glycosis
- Krebs cycle
- Electron transport
Where does the second stage of cellular respiration take place within the mitochondria?
Within the matrix
Where does the third stage of cellular respiration take place?
Takes place on the inner membrane
How much ATP is produced from
cellular respiration?
38 ATP molecules
How much ATP is produced from anaerobic respiration?
0 ATP molecules
