Respiration Flashcards
what happens to FADH and NADH in oxidative phosphorylation?
they supply electrons and to the electron transport chain, provide H+ ions to help establish the electrochemical gradient, and are reoxidised
are NAD and FAD prosthetic groups?
FAD is a prosthetic group but NAD is not
coenzymes defintion
small organic non-protein molecules that bind temporarily to the active site of enzymes and assists it in its function
why do coenzymes need to be recycled back to their original state after a reaction occurrs?
because they are chemically changed during the reaction
what are the 2 types of cofactor?
coenzymes
prosthetic groups
cofactor definition
a substance that has to be present to ensure that an enzyme-catalysed reaction take place at the appropriate rate
