respiration Flashcards
State the uses of energy in living organisms
- muscle contraction
- protein synthesis,
- cell division
- active transport
- growth
- the passage of nerve impulses
- the maintenance of a constant body temperature
define aerobic respiration
- chemical reactions in cells
- that use oxygen
- to break down nutrient molecules
- to release energy
write it down
aerobic respiration word equation
glucose + oxygen –> carbon dioxide + water
aerboic respiration chemical equation
C6H12O6 –> 6CO2 + 6H20
define anaerobic respiration
- chemical reactions in cells
- that break nutrient molecules
- to release energy
- without using oxygen.
write it down
anaerobic respiration word equation
in muscles during vigorous exercising
glucose –> lactic acid
write it down
anaerobic word equation
in yeast
glucose –> alcohol + carbon dioxide
write it down
anaerobic chemical equation
in yeast
C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Give the advantage of using aerobic rather than anaerobic respiration
anaerobic respiration releases much less energy per glucose molecule then aerobic respiration
* useful in excercising when it allows you to keep on using ur muscles for while longer
What’s an oxygen debt?
Lactic acid builds up in muslces & blood during vigorous excercise causing an oxygen debt.
Outline how the oxygen debt is removed after
exercise
- High heart rate to transport lactic acid from muscles to liver
- High breathing rate to provide oxygen
- to breakdown lactic acid by aerobic respiration to carbon dioxide & water
- lactic acid is broke down in the liver
