respiration Flashcards
what is respiration
- using O2 to break down glucose to generate ATP
respiration equation
C6H12O6 + O2 –> CO2 + H2O
Glycolysis steps
1-3) glucose energized by ATP
4) 6 carbons from glucose split into two 3-carbon pyruvates
5) redox rxn generates 2NADH
6-9) 2ATP and pyruvate produced
pyruvate oxidation steps
1) 3-carbon pyruvates energized by ATP
2) two 2-carbon acetyl coA remain
3) 2CO2 and 2NADH produced
Kreb’s cycle steps
1) acetyl coA stokes the furnace
2-3) redox rxns generate ATP and NADH
4-6) further redox rxns generate FADH2 and more NADH
- at this point the glucose molecule is fully oxidized to CO2
- net gain of 24 hydrogens
ETC steps
1-3) in the first 3 protein complexes, each oxygen accepts 2 electrons from the chain and picks up 2 hydrogens from the surrounding solution… water formed
4) in the 4th protein complex, 4 electrons are used to reduce a molecule of oxygen gas and form water
Chemiosmosis steps
1) electrons harvested from glucose in ETC drive protons across membrane against their concentration gradients
2) the return of these protons by diffusion generates ATP
