2) Chloride ion enters specified protein channel and makes the chloride protein channel uncomfortable
3) ion snaps and protein channel flips so that the opening is now on the inside of the cell membrane, now comfortable
4) chloride ion leaves, making the channel uncomfortable again
5) chloride channel flips to be comfortable again, and can now accept a new chloride ion
