Photosynthesis Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
- process that captures energy from the sun to produce sugars
where do light-dependent rxns and Calvin cycle occur?
LD rxn> in thylakoids
CC> in stroma
light dependent rxn steps
1) PS2 takes in energy from sunlight, which is used to boost the electrons that have entered the PS2 to a higher energy level
2) electrons then passed through an ETC, releasing energy and bringing the energy level of the electron lower again
3) the electron then enters PS1, the PS1 absorbs energy from the sunlight and charges up the electron once again
4) NADP+ picks up the hydrogen electron, making it reduced to NADPH, and carries it to the Calvin cycle
Calvin cycle steps
1) complex series of enzyme-catalyzed rxns convert CO2 into organic carbohydrates that become sugars
2) Conversion of NADPH back to NADP+ provides electrons to facilitate rxns
3) conversion of ATP back to ADP releases energy that can power metabolic rxns
