Respiration Flashcards
Cell respiration is the controlled release of energy from organic compounds to produce ATP
Respiration
An immediate source of energy. However it is unstable and releases chemical energy. It contains a small amount of energy compared to glucose.
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
If we have 3 phosphates in Adenosine Triphosphate then there is energy however if we take 1 phosphate away then there is no energy.
Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP)
The circles are bonded together to store energy.
Phosphate
When glucose is split into 2 with a little bit of ATP to create 2 pyruvate
Glycolysis
Lysis: break
Another molecule that stores energy for another step of respiration
Pyruvate
When there is no oxygen present in the cytoplasm pyruvate is converted into lactic acids (animals) and ethanol + Co2 (plants and yeast)
Anaerobic Fermentation
When oxygen is presented in the cytoplasm pyruvates enter the mitochondria and the chemical reactions in there convert the pyruvates into water and CO2
Aerobic Respiration
Thick solution that fills the cell and is covered by a cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Membrane cell organelles which generate the chemical energy needed to power biochemical reactions
Mitochondria
