Photosynthesis Flashcards
Organisms that make their own food. (self-feed)
Autotroph
Organisms who consume other organisms in order to create energy.
Heterotroph
The production of organic carbon compounds using light energy in two steps.
water + carbon dioxide - oxygen + glucose
6 H2O + 6 CO2 - 6 O2 + C6H12O6
Photosynthesis
Some organisms like bacteria use inorganic compounds such as H2S which comes from hydrothermal vents.
Chemosynthesis
Feeds on living or recently killed organisms by ingestion.
Consumer
Bears eat fish that just died because it caught the fish. If you leave the the fish on floor and it rots the worms will eat since the bear doesn’t want it.
An organism that shoots out digestive enzymes into dead stuff and then absorbs the juice
Saprotroph
(fungi)
An organism that eats dead organic matter and digests it internally.
Detritivore
(worm)
Complex organic carbon compounds build the structure of their cells and carry out life processes
Carbohydrates(Sugars)
ex: glucose
- Split water producing oxygen gas (O2)
- Oxygenproduce in photosynthesis is from the photolysis of water
2H2O (I) - 4e + 4H + O2(g)
Light-dependent reaction
Light and water = oxygen
Chemical energy
The reaction consumes chemical energy from the light-dependent reaction from step 1 and CO2 to produce glucose (sugar)
Light-independent reaction
Chemical energy + carbon dioxide = glucose
Chemical bonds are broken as a result of the transfer of light energy
Photolysis
Cells which contain chlorophyll and other light-sensitive pigments that capture solar energy. In the presence of carbon dioxide, such cells are able to convert this solar energy into energy-rich organic molecules, such as glucose.
Photosynthetic cells
Inside the photosynthetic cell, the leaves of the plant perform both light and dark reactions. These organelles are green dots shown above.
Chloroplasts
It has an internal structure with a large surface area which allows for efficiency and a high rate of photosynthesis.
The chemical compound that absorbs energy from visible light.
- Chlorophyll (green)
- Xanthophylls (yellows)
- Carotenoids (oranges)
- Anthocyanins (reds)
Pigments
The main pigment found in photosynthesizing organisms
