Respiration Flashcards
Earthworms
- Breath through their skin
- gas exchange happens on the skin surface
Insects (grasshopper)
- Breathe through holes called spiracles
Fish
- Have gills
- Gas exchange happens in gill filaments
Frogs
Breathe using
- lungs
- skin
- glottis (membrane in cheeks)
Birds
- Have lungs and air sacs
Mammals
- Have lungs and trachea
Nasal passages
Filters air and humidifies it by adding moisture from its mucous lining
Oral Cavity
- Mostly for food and liquid intake
- Can be used for breathing if necessary
Nasopharynx
Space connecting nasal and oral cavities
Epiglottis
Covers the trachea while swallowing food or liquid
Larynx
- Surrounds trachea to channel air
- Creates noise (contains vocal chords)
Trachea
Channels air to the lungs
Bronchus
(plural: bronchi)
- One of two branches leading to the lungs
- Channels air
Bronchiole
Tiny branches that lead air into the alveoli
Alveoli
(singular: Alveolus)
Provides a thin but wide surface area for gas exchange with surrounding blood vessels
Diaphragm
Contracts and relaxes to allow air to move through the lungs
Medulla Oblongata
Controls breathing, heart rate and digestion
Inhalation/inspiration
- Rib cage moves down
- diaphragm contracts
- pressure in lungs goes down
- volume of thoracic cavity goes up
exhalation/expiration
- Rib cage moves up
- diaphragm relaxes
- pressure in lungs goes up
- volume of thoracic cavity goes down
