Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
Respiration
A
chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy
2
Q
Aerobic respiration
A
(involves oxygen, happens in mitochondria)
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water
C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 → 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O
3
Q
Anaerobic respiration
A
(does not include oxygen, releases less energy)
Glucose → lactic acid + energy
C5H1206 → 2C3H6O3 + ATP
4
Q
Actions to remove lactic acid
A
- Aerobic respiration in the liver to break down the lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water
- a higher heart rate for a time after stopping exercise so that lactic acid can be transported in the blood from the muscles to the liver
- deeper breathing for a time after stopping exercise to provide the oxygen your liver needs to break down the lactic acid
