Respiration Flashcards
What type of energy is stored in food?
Chemical Energy
How is the chemical energy from food released?
released by burning the food, it is then converted from chemical energy to heat energy. (measured in kJ)
How is the chemical energy stored in glucose released?
By a series of enzyme controlled reactions called respiration.
What is energy needed for?
- Muscle contraction
- Cell division
- protein synthesis
What does ATP do?
Provides us with energy.
How do we get energy from ATP?
by breaking the high energy bonds between the last two phosphates in ATP.
When ATP is broken down and one phosphate is removed, what is the new molecule called?
ADP (adenosine DI phosphate) + PI (inorganic phosphate)
What is the first stage of respiration and does it require oxygen?
Glycolysis + no.
Explain glycolysis?
Glucose 6C is broken down into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid & 2 molecules of ATP are produced
What is the 2nd stage of respiration and does it require oxygen?
The Krebs cycle + yes.
Explain the Krebs cycle?
Pyruvic acid is broken down to release co2 and hydrogen. Hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water.
How many ATP molecules were produced by the breakdown of 1 pyruvic acid molecule?
18
Overall, how many ATP molecules are broken down during aerobic respiration?
38 ATP
