Pus in the back of the throat
Why is it an emergency?
It impacts the airway (obstruction)
Assessments / signs and symptoms

High Fever
Refusal to eat
Drooling
Snoring
Swelling on one side of neck
Is swelling of the neck unilateral or bilateral?
Unilateral
Why shouldn’t we use a tongue depressor?
May elicit gag reflex that blocks the airway
Diagnostic test
Radiograph
Treatment for retropharyngeal abscess
IV antibiotic (should be admitted)
Surgical drainage ( transport to operating room )
Tonsillectomy (using laser surgery or ligation)
Removal of tonsils
Tonsillectomy
What are the 2 ways to remove tonsils surgically?
Laser surgery and ligation
Risks of tonsillectomy
(AHA)
Aspiration
Hemorrhage
Anesthesia effect
Watch out for and report if there is:

Severe pain
Swallowing frequently (clearing throat)
Signs of bleeding
What to avoid?
(SCAR)
Sports (competitive)
Carbonated drinks
Acidic drinks / fools
Red food/drink
Why avoid red food/ drinks?
Masks bleeding
What are allowed?
(PIE)
Popsicles
Ice chips
Ear ache
Why are popsicles and ice chips allowed?
clear liquids / cold→ vasoconstriction, anesthetic
