respi immunology Flashcards
what is BALT?
bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue
contains immune cells like B, T cells and macrophages involved in immune responses against inhaled pathogens and antigens
what is the ring of lymphoid tissue found in the throat called?
Waldeyer’s ring
where is IL-22 secreted from?
ILC3 and Th17 cells found in BALT
what function does IL-22 have?
promote epithelial cell proliferation, barrier integrity
where are neutrophils usually found?
usually remain in blood vessels but invade lung interstitium and alveoli in infection
what are M cells and their function?
microfold cells that lines the epithelium adjacent to BALT
transport antigen from lumen to basal surface, APC in lamina propria take up antigen
what is the predominant Ig found in mucosal secretions?
secretory IgA (IgA2 dimers)
which IgA binds and neutralises pathogens/toxins?
secretory IgA
when are Th2 cells involved?
allergic responses
which IgA has pro-inflammatory properties?
Serum IgA (release ROS, produce cytotoxic antibodies)
which IgA has anti-inflammatory properties?
secretory IgA
which IgA binds to innate cell receptors to facilitate inflammation?
serum IgA
